ESTEVE has begun work to build a new manufacturing unit at its Celrà plant (Girona), a project for which it plans to invest 100 million euros until 2026.
The company will thus expand the production capacity of active pharmaceutical ingredients in its main industrial centre. In addition, when the new facilities are operational in the last quarter of 2026, ESTEVE will have around 100 people who will join its current staff of 370 professionals.
The expansion will include the construction of new production and service buildings, as well as the installation of up to 150 cubic meters of reaction volume. This will result in a 45% increase in ESTEVE's current production capacity in Celrà and an additional 15% increase in the company's global capacity.
The construction of the new unit at the Girona plant represents a significant advance in the business of development, manufacturing, and sale of active ingredients for third parties (CMO). It will have advanced technological solutions that will allow the production of high-potency active pharmaceutical ingredients, in addition to incorporating various innovations in digitalization and use of data. This unit will produce several new products that will be added to the current portfolio and will be distributed in the main regulated markets: the United States, Europe, and Japan.
"Thanks to our commitment to quality, efficiency and reliability, our activity in the development and manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients has experienced notable growth in recent years. The expansion of our main industrial center will allow us to satisfy a growing global demand and expand our activity, advancing our mission of improving people's lives", highlighted the General Manager of Esteve Química, Pere Mañé.
In total, ESTEVE has a chemical R&D center in Barcelona and three production plants in Catalonia located in Celrà (Gironès), Banyeres del Penedès (Baix Penedès) and Lliçà de Vall (Vallès Oriental). Outside of Spain, the company has manufacturing centers in Mexico (Jiutepec) and China (Shaoxing).
Sustainable building and cooperation with the local environment
In line with ESTEVE's commitment to sustainability, the new plant's construction will adhere to sustainable building criteria. We aim to obtain the BREEAM certification, which validates our adoption of efficiency measures and reduction of energy and water consumption in equipment, heating, lighting, and materials. It also certifies the use of refrigerants with low CO2 emission potential and the responsible management of waste, contributing to improving people's quality of life. Additionally, like all ESTEVE facilities, the new plant will be powered by renewable energy, thanks to green energy purchase agreements that help reduce the company's scope 2 carbon footprint.
Alongside expanding its industrial center, ESTEVE will collaborate on increasing the capacity of the municipal treatment plant by 50%, through an innovative public-private partnership with the Celrà City Council and three other local companies.
